Tom,

Well that is interesting that you google what is the purpose of software and I come up. Honestly, I am still searching for a clear answer, but over the years the I have determined the purpose of software is to solve some sort of problem. This is why when I work with clients I often ask, "What problem are you trying to solve?" To often the solution they have come up is the solution to another problem.

Thanks for the email.

Hello David,

I googled "what is the purpose of software," your blog came up, and I found it interesting. Anyway, have you since found an answer?

I am currently developing on ios with the goal of solving disputes between trade unions concerning new materials and who should have jurisdiction.

Best,

You make good points David. I think you're spot on as far as the futures of pure programmers and software writers are concerned.

As "color by numbers" software development becomes more popular I think we'll see a large scale retreat to the bastion of management as people try to preserve their marketability.

Very insightful article.

I'm trying to do a research project regarding populations and growth within software development industry. You have some really great information here that I'd love to use for my paper but cannot without a source for your figures. Would you possibly be willing to tell me where you got your numbers. The links all link back to this same page - I tried them.

Thanks so much

Is there an agrument to say that sophisticated builds will still require highly skilled practitioners? Yes you can now buy a prefab piece of ironwork, but to get something customised or something changes the smith is still required.

It may be that the prefab development techniquies will become so easy to "tweak" that the customisation is not needed anymore, but I think we have a few years before the developers become lego brick contructors, rather than developers - and the ability to create your own custom bricks in the machine process will still be valuable.

So I agree with the comparison, but hope it is not as significant as you suggest soon. Great article!
